Living among loons for a lifetime gives me a unique sense of this strange bird, it's mannerisms, and it's sounds. Everyone has heard a loon call (in the background of movies and in lands where no loons live in those movies) , but has everyone heard the sound of a loon taking off of the water and going airborne? It's quite a production and particularly breathtaking at times when the water is like glass and the bird runs with it's feet and beats the water with its wingtips in short fast strokes when it is close to blast-off. Leaving the water is no small feat and over time, loons do it almost effortlessly.
Joe Baltich is a veteran wilderness artist born and raised in northeastern Minnesota. Growing up on a wilderness resort which he still operates and having served as a wilderness guide, Joe developed his artistic skills and observations in his early life. He sold commissioned works that paid for much of his college education. Then, life and business got in the way and Joe took a 32 year hiatus from painting only having returned back to the brush in 2014. He now paints commissioned works with a growing art business as well as many pieces for his Inspire Wild Art Exhibit at Northwind Lodge which features the famous Painted Canoe of Ely.
